Research Journal on Mazu Culture-4
Background:
Conversation with a rideshare driver en route from the train station to Meizhou Island.
Content:
The driver visits the Mazu temple each year to pay respects.
Some devotees reside in the temple.
Two key festivals are celebrated:
Mazu’s birthday on the 23rd day of the 3rd lunar month.
Mazu’s ascension on the 9th day of the 9th lunar month.
Pilgrims from other regions, including Taiwan, Guangdong, and Zhejiang, come to make offerings, with visitors almost daily.
Small Mazu temples are found all along the coast of Putian.
Meizhou Island is where Mazu ascended to heaven.
Each village generally has 2-3 Mazu temples.
Devotion often deepens with age; older individuals tend to be more devout.
Some families bring small Mazu statues into their homes.
Both large and small temples are funded by villagers and outside believers, with support accumulating over decades.
